The word Yoga means Union or to yoke.
The union of the breath and the body. Yoga can be seen as a form of moving meditation, because as you focus on your breathing and the poses, you don’t have time to think about anything else that might be in your mind – work, an argument, your grocery shopping you need to do.
You might be wondering what is Holistic Hatha yoga? Well it’s not just the yoga poses (called asana) that you get in most modern yoga classes, but is more of whole mind, body and spirit practice.
According Merriam Webster dictionary, holistic is defined as:
relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts holistic medicine attempts to treat both the mind and the bodyholistic ecology views humans and the environment as a single system
What does a holistic yoga class involve?
It starts with warm ups, to get the body and joints primed for movement to help prevent injury
Followed by breathing exercises (pranayama – which translated as: expansion of the breath/life force energy) to calm and relax the mind, and energize the body
Next comes the ever popular yoga poses (Asana), combined in routines/sequences as well, moving, stretching and strengthening all areas of the body, ending the Asana portion with Shavasana or corpse pose
And finally ends with a short meditation practice, focusing your attention/awareness on the breath (or a mantra, or your heart or on various areas of the body) to leave you calm and refreshed as you move on with the rest of your day!
